Golden Light

Jaf, first of all we want to thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with the readers of Secret Madeira. Please tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into photography?
Thank you for asking me. I am a civil servant who took up digital photography about two years ago. A long time ago, I used to shoot black and white film. I still like that aesthetic, but digital is so much faster and more fun.

Do you work as a professional photographer or is photography mainly a hobby for you?
It’s a hobby. I find photography a good way to relax from work and other pressures.

We see on your Flickr stream that you have a very large collection of Madeira images, captured by your photo camera. Can you describe Madeira in just only one word?
Paradise

How many times have you visited Madeira Island? And when was the first time?
Twice so far. The first time was only last year, in 2012. I will definitely go again.

The first time you visited Madeira, what was the reason for your visit?
I had seen some beautiful photos of Madeira (some of yours) and read some very positive articles about it.

After discovering the island through your eyes and camera-lens, what would be your reason to visit it again?
Madeira is very beautiful and relaxed and has a comfortable climate. The food is also very good, I really like the local fish and beef.

A Small Piece of Ocean

We say that Madeira Island is an excellent destination for photographers. Do you agree? If so, why?
It’s perfect. The island has very varied scenery and beautiful light conditions that change often. The towns and villages are very photogenic, as are the locals.

When is the best season (for you) to travel to Madeira Island?
I slightly preferred autumn for photography, because the weather and light conditions were a bit more dramatic.

Tell us about your most favourite, and also the least favourite thing about Madeira.
The air smells so incredibly good in Madeira, that’s the first thing you notice. For me, there is no downside.

What is the first thing you recommend people to do when they arrive in Madeira?
Go for a walk with your camera, of course!

Where do you recommend other photographers to go for on Madeira Island?
I really like the area around Porto da Cruz in the North East. It has everything in terms of scenery. I would recommend visiting both the coastline and the surrounding mountains.

Wave

Can you compare your Madeira photo collection with the other photo collections on your Flickr stream?
The Madeira photos are the most interesting, I think. They are much richer in colour and the motifs stand out compared to the rest.

What do you think of the locals/people from Madeira?
The Madeirans are very friendly and respectable people with a strong work ethic. I really like them.

Market

Any other thing(s) about Madeira that travelers/photographers should know?
I recommend taking a couple of coach tours to discover the island. Then you can return to the places that you liked the most and spend some time there with your camera. That way you can get more individual photos. You can go to most places by bus.

More of Jaf photos can be found at www.flickr.com/photos/jaf_photo/

We are very happy that Wim Reichert has agreed on taking part in an interview for the Secret Madeira. Wim is from The Netherlands and visits Madeira 2-3 times per year.

Wim, first of all we want to thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with the readers of Secret Madeira. Please tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am 55 years old and due to several experiences during my life, I am now completely focused in enjoying my life and do everything what I want to do. You only live once! Madeira is one of my favourite destinations. We love the island, but also our friends that live there.

Can you describe Madeira in just only one word?
Relaxation

How many times have you visited Madeira Island? And when was the first time?
This our 19th time that we visited Madeira. The first time was in April 2007 (Easter).

The first time you visited Madeira, what was the reason for your visit?
Our purpose then was to visit friends that moved to Madeira. But we also discovered the beauty of the island.

And what is the reason when you visited it the last time?
To enjoy Madeira and our friends

Igreja do Monte

What are the three best reasons to include Madeira on your travel list?
The beauty of Madeira, the good weather and of course our friends that live there.

When is the best season (for you) to travel to Madeira Island?
Any season is fine for me.

Tell us about your most favourite and also the least favourite thing about Madeira.
Most favourite: the good weather and the beautiful nature. The least: all the construction that is going on at this moment.

Lets talk about food: what is your favourite Madeiran food and that you would suggest everyone should try?
The meat sticks (Espetada). Also there is a lot of fish dishes on the island that is worth trying, but I am not a fish-lover.

What is the first thing you recommend people to do when they arrive in Madeira?
Go into Funchal and see the people. And enjoy the many gardens and flowers they have.

Madeira Festa da Flor folklore

Where do you recommend to go for a day trip on Madeira Island?
For me the whole island is interesting. It depends on what your interested in.

Do you have a place on the island where you feel most comfortable, or had the most fun? Where’s your secret hangout place on Madeira?
We love the hotel (The Golden residence in Funchal) and its surroundings. Shopping and food are all close by and easy access to discover the island.

What do you think of the locals/people from Madeira?
They are friendly but a bit shy.

Do you know an ‘off-the-beaten path’ place in Madeira? Tell us which one.
Take a taxi and let him show you the hidden places of the island, where no tourist normally goes. You will love it.

Faial

We love souvenirs! Which one would you suggest us to buy in Madeira Island?
There are nice towels with embroidered flowers on it. It’s a nice present for friends, but take also some for yourself. At home it reminds you of Madeira … and it is useful. There are also a lot of things you can buy that people love to have, but I am not into that. I like useful souvenirs that reminds me of my holiday destination.

Any other thing(s) about Madeira that travellers should know?
Go and discover Madeira! The best way is to start is by doing some tours and afterwards, when you return, you can go on your own to enjoy the sites that you loved most during the tour.

Travellers and Tourists

Most tourists and travelers, who never worked nor were related to some kind of tourism organization, often do not realize what is happening behinds the scenes when they arrive on their destination. For example … here on the island of Madeira there is a hidden world of which travelers are not aware of. Believe or not but there is a large community of people working hard and long … and their main goal is to please the island visitor, who is planning to spend his/her holiday … in a relaxing and pleasant environment.

Unfortunately there are many visitors that think they are the only ones visiting the island … and so some of them get annoyed when things are not going well. It is understandable that you get angry when there is a problem during your vacation … but I myself would try to solve it first and then afterwards try to figure out how it could happen … but the last one preferably after my holiday.

Regrettably some visitors make a big fuss out of this and do not realize that, if it was a human error, it is not always intentionally. Sentences such as “mistakes can happen” are not in they vocabulary. And then they threaten with complaints and/or lawsuits against the travel institutes or persons.

They also do not realize that the island receives over more than hundred of visitors per day … per day! … and that they are all clients of the tourism and holiday community on the island. With community I mean: hotels, travel agents, guides, bus drivers, taxi drivers, restaurants, leisure agencies etc.

I noticed that people in these holiday businesses are working hard and often making long working hours. Most of them are working from 6 am till 9 pm … and the Saturdays and Sundays, for most of them, are also working days.

So for those who are planning to visit Madeira (or other destination in the world) … I have the following message for them:

Enjoy your holiday … even if things do go wrong.

Help the people who are trying to solve your problem instead of making them more nervous with claims or threats. Rely on the fact that these people are busy with your case … even if you do not hear or see any immediate results. Of course if you have doubts … take contact with your travel agent, but remember they are also like you … they have a job and a private life.

Be aware that Murphy’s Law especially applies on areas where people are working 7 days per week … more than 12 hours per day … with hundred clients per day.

Claudine, first of all we want to thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with the readers of Secret Madeira. Please tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into photography?
First of all, let me thank you, and I would want to thank the inhabitants of Madeira for their welcomed.
I’m a French journalist, words side, but working for 25 years with photojournalists. Two years ago I discovered the app Instagram, which was ‘born’ only a few months ago. I looked for visual information about the world. The interest was on a professional level. Then I discovered the warmer social network I ever knew, and a bunch of amazing creative photographers. I got hooked and discovered the pleasure(s) of photography, at first with my mobile then with a SLR too, thanks to another social network, Tumblr.

Do you work as a professional photographer or is photography mainly a hobby for you?
Photography is nothing but a hobby for me. However, the knowledge is very useful for my job.

We see on your Flickr stream that you have an interesting collection of Madeira images, captured by your photo camera. Can you describe Madeira in just only one word?
Spring (I’m not very original, saying that.)

How many times have you visited Madeira Island? And when was the first time?
My first and only stay was on March 2013.

Shared curiosity

The first time you visited Madeira, what was the reason for your visit?
To reborn and find fresh hope. Sorry, that may sound pompous but it is true!

After discovering the island through your eyes and camera-lens, what would be a reason to visit it again?
Well, being a street photographer, maybe I could be back to catch more life scenes and light plays.

Lovers on Madeira

We say that Madeira Island is an excellent destination for photographers. Do you agree? If so, why?
The splendid light of the 32th North parallel, of course.

When is the best season (for you) to travel to Madeira Island?
Coming from Paris, tired by a long winter, which seems never ending this year, I arrived in a full springtime — in the middle of March. The flowers and the sweetness of the air. Things being what they are, the rain spoiled my last days, however a drive of a few kilometers were enough for me to find the sun back again.

Tell us about your most favourite, and also the least favourite thing about Madeira.
Once again, I won’t be very original: the Levadas are awesome, plus the numerous trails of pedestrian hike all along the island. And the kindness of people in villages.
What I didn’t like are the parts of the island that was being devolved by the tourist industry, for example some places on the south coast were destroyed by horrible concrete hotels. That’s ugly!

What is the first thing you recommend people to do when they arrive in Madeira?
Catch your breath? Smile? Open your eyes and your ears? Be curious? I don’t know.

Where do you recommend other photographers to go for on Madeira Island?
I am not good in this advices game, being in Madeira as in Paris or in London. For me, catching images is a matter of pleasure. Each one can find his/her pleasure where and how he/she wants to. With the Madeiran light — when it is not raining —, one can have fun everywhere. A sunrise from the highest mountains in the center of the island, maybe?

Can you compare your Madeira photo collection with the other photo collections on your Flickr stream?
Of course not. Every journey is unique, every light on Earth is unique, every meeting is unique. It would be absurd.

What do you think of the locals/people from Madeira?
Fernanda! This woman will remain for me the symbol of people of Madeira that I will never forget. Welcoming, generous, lovely, full of humour. We managed to speak in a mixture of Spanish, with a little Portuguese and French. It was an unforgettable meeting with this woman (and her friends) who holds alone, ‘solita’ as she says, her own café in Seixal.
By the way, let me say thanks to her through your blog and that I will send her the portraits that I took of her — lack of time until now.

We are very happy that ‘Bas1953′ (his Flickr Photo stream) has agreed on taking part in an interview for the Secret Madeira. Bas is a photographer from The Netherlands.

Bas, first of all we want to thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with the readers of Secret Madeira. Please tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into photography?

It started with Holiday pictures and after my heart attack I went on spending more time in taking pictures. After changing to digital it became more and more. Friends asked me a lot about the pictures I took and that’s why I started putting them on Flickr.

Do you work as a professional photographer or is photography mainly a hobby for you?

This is a hobby of mine

We see on your Flickr stream that you have a very big collection of Madeira images, captured by your photo camera. Can you describe Madeira in just only one word?

Incredible

Ponta do Sol sunset

How many times have you visited Madeira Island? And when was the first time?

I have been in Madeira 19 times. The first time was April 2007 (Easter)

The first time you visited Madeira, what was the reason for your visit?

Visiting friends

After discovering the island through your eyes and camera-lens, what would be your reason to visit it again?

To see the non tourist places and visiting our friends again

We say that Madeira Island is an excellent destination for photographers. Do you agree? If so, why?

YES ! because you will find the Culture and Nature all together on a small island.

Funchal

When is the best season (for you) to travel to Madeira Island?

All year round

Tell us about your most favourite, and also the least favourite thing about Madeira.

My most favourite is the weather, as most of the time it is excellent for taking pictures. The least is all the construction that is going on at the moment.

What is the first thing you recommend people to do when they arrive in Madeira?

Get out of the hotel and start exploring Madeira!

Where do you recommend other photographers to go for on Madeira Island?

I recommend search for the festivals, get in touch with the people and admire the flowers.

What do you think of the locals/people from Madeira?

The people from Madeira are friendly and helpful.

Any other thing(s) about Madeira that travellers/photographers should know?

Yes, Madeira is a mountain area, so be prepared to climb.

Google Street View is a service that is integrated with Google Maps and has become a very popular webtool. The service allows anyone to view and navigate through the web through the gallery of 360-degree images, taken at street level.

Funchal’s streets, most Madeira towns and villages, … regional roads, landscape and even tunnels are finally on Google Street View. You can now explore the urban and also rural landmarks on Madeira Island through 360-degree street-level imagery.

However the images were made in 2009/2010 when the automobile equipped with a special camera for collecting images of streets and roads, came to the Green Pearl of the Atlantic. You still can experience some of the beauty that the island has to offer (Note: I wrote ‘some of the beauty’ because the full perception of Madeira’s beauty can only be achieved by visiting it).

Unfortunately Porto Santo does not have (yet) any participation in the Street View ‘madness’.

Madeira Quase Esquecida has created a video, using the Street View, in which you can experience the route that the Monte Railway (Comboio do Monte) used to carry people between Funchal and Monte, from 1893 till 1943. It was an extension (from the station Pombal to the Monte station) of approximately 2.500m.

Now … can anyone just try to convince Google to return to Madeira Island and have them collect photos in order for them to create a Street View imagery of all the Levadas walking paths and trails. That would result in an unique and exceptional value asset for Google Street View.

Anita is DJ for the Dutch radio-station Radio Capelle (105.3 FM Capelle aan den IJssel, The Netherlands)

Can you describe Madeira in just only one word?
Beautiful

How many times have you visited Madeira Island? And when was the first time?
Once, April 2013

What are the three best reasons to include Madeira on our travel list?
Quietness, Mountains and Green

Tell us about your most favourite and also the least favourite thing about Madeira.
Favourite: the Mountains; the least was the large number of closed up stores.

Lets talk about food: what is your favorite Madeiran food and that you would suggest everyone should try?
Hmm The food was OK enough but nothing to recommend

What is the first thing you recommend people to do when they arrive on the island?
Watch the sea, just outside the airport

Where do you recommend to go for a day trip on Madeira Island?
You can’t go wrong… just start walking or driving in any direction

What do you think of the locals/people from Madeira?
Friendly enough. Not particularly interesting

Do you know an ‘off-the-beaten path’ place in Madeira? Tell us which one.
Anywhere deep in the mountains

We love souvenirs! Which one would you suggest us to buy in Madeira Island?
None, not very interesting souvenirs to buy, or you must enjoy your alcohol.

Any other thing(s) about the island that travelers should know?
Just go and find out yourself…
Oh and DO rent a car!

Interview with Filipe Teixeira and Rui Nelson the creators of the project EcoMusicalis.

What is EcoMusicalis?
Ecomusicalis is a concept that emerged out of a will to bring together music and nature, following the natural instinct of the human being to go back to its roots, to nature.

It began as primary as possible, bringing the music into the nature. This way nature becomes the stage for the performances.

This concerts are given by professional and amateur artists, who accept and respect EcoMusicalis concept, opening the doors of this project to great variety on an instrumental level, as well as artistic.

Who are the people that are behind the EcoMusicalis project?
First of all we need to understand that Ecomusicalis is not an association or a business. It is managed by the enthusiasts Filipe and Rui who can count on several collaborators who transforms this project into a spiral form, where the goal is never to have a leadership, but rather a team that shares and embraces the project with a mutual dedication between them.

Ecomusicalis – Fanal concert

What are the goals of EcoMusicalis project?
This project stands on the motto that music with nature becomes perfect and has it’s cause. Thus, we want to awaken human minds to acknowledge and recognize this whole. In order for this to happen, it will be schedule concerts in the nature-spaces, where it will be given the opportunity to appreciate and admire above all this symbiosis, that will certainly help to understand the meaning of the world. With this project we intend to bring the community to nature, immediately fostering respect for its space, we think that it is a privileged platform to pass this message.

It is also our purpose, in a short run, to be a project with a solid acceptance and appreciation internally in the island (government agencies, environmental organizations, local community, among others) and in a long run, a product that helps, in some way, to promote, not only but also touristically Madeira Island.

Are the concerts free or is there an admission fee? And how many times do you give a concert?
The basis of the project Ecomusicalis is to have one free concert per month, following the concept: “Ecomusicalis pure”.

We are working on new Ecomusicalis projects creating the opportunity to have, perhaps, weekly performances, where payed concerts are, probably going to happen. Ecomusicalis is also working on developing the “free-economy” concept.

Ecomusicalis – Canyoning concert

This seems like an unique concept. Does it exist elsewhere in the world? And how popular is it?
Over the past months Ecomusicalis has been growing it’s audience, physical as well as virtual. Ecomusicalis is already a trade name. Until now, we haven´t heard anything like it. If is exist anywhere else in the wold, we can not say, but it is, sure, possible.

Why is Madeira Island ideal for this type of concept?
This Island is well known for its wonderful nature. From the mountains to the sea and the beautiful Laurissilva forest which makes Madeira a unique place for the concept of this project which aims to let people get to know the “small great” wonders of the island, not only to the islanders but also to tourist and visitors.

Last question (but not least) … where can island visitors find information about when and where your next concerts will take place?
A website will be launched soon. For updated information always check our Facebook page:

Do you travel a lot?
I used to travel a lot … loved the West Coast of USA and Yosemite National Park.

How many times have you visited Madeira Island? And when was the first time?
Eight times. The first time in 2005

The first time you visited Madeira, what was the reason for your visit?
I was recovering from a long illness

And what is the reason now?
There is no where finer to visit that incorporates everything I desire in a holiday on one small island. Coast, Mountains, Wooded Valleys etc etc etc

Can you describe Madeira in just only one word?
Peace

What are the three best reasons to include Madeira on our travel list?
Scenery Peoples Climate

When is the best season (for you) to travel to Madeira Island?
I haven’t visited in all seasons but as far as I can see there is no “off “ season. I love August….those lovely long hot summer days. Christmas/New Year and the wonder of the Island dressed for Christmas and the New Year Fireworks. Then the Festa da Flor … how on earth can you chose a season to visit Madeira……anytime is Madeira Time!

Madeira Island – North Coast

Tell us about your most favourite and also the least favourite thing about Madeira.
Being brought up on the Coast of Devon and having Exmoor and Dartmoor as my hinterland I have no shortage of Beauty so these things are my favourite things about Madeira. The Coast, the mountains and the wooded valleys. Least favourite….How would a lover answer the question about his/her loved one. I am besotted with the Island.

Lets talk about food: what is your favorite Madeiran food and that you would suggest everyone should try?
Hmmmm Scabbard Fish….or maybe Steak on a Stone….or those lovely custard tarts…or a steak roll for lunch. Then there is Riso….hmmm so many lovely meals there. In Madeira there are many places to try in the Old Town…. the back streets of Funchal…the Hotel Zone. Stroll around and seek out these eateries for yourself. There is something to suit everyones tastes.

What is the first thing you recommend people to do when they arrive in Madeira?
Leave your worries on the plane and Relax into Madeira.. Dont try and do everything in a week /two weeks holiday because there will always be another visit. Stroll around Funchal and take in the atmosphere. Sit outside a pavement cafe and watch the world go by. A few days in maybe take an island tour or a boat trip….catch a bus and visit the Botanical Gardens….join a walk on the Levadas to give you a smell and flavour of the Forest.
Where do you recommend to go for a day trip on Madeira Island?

As above. Island tours … boat trips … levada walks … local bus journeys are exciting especially the Garajau route!

What is the most famous landmark? And which one is your favourite?
Cabo Girao is the most famous landmark I guess. There is no finer sight than the sunsetting and the cliff bathing in its glow or swimming beneath its formidable height.

I like the rock off the Lido in view of the Hotel Zone. I knew I am settled down for a good stay when I can look on that (its name escapes me!) Again there are so many landmarks whether mountain or coast or inland that it is very difficult to name one. I am very very fond of the Balcoes.

Madeira Island – Camara de Lobos

Do you have a place on the island where you feel most comfortable, or had the most fun? Where’s your secret hangout place on Madeira?
I suppose this would have to be the Lido walk from the Hotel to Camara de Lobos. I like to get up early before the rest of the visitors before its light and watch the sunrise . I feel the Island is mine at this time. The only folk I meet are early morning joggers or locals off to work. It is a special time. I tend to do this walk twice a day (if not all the way to Camara de Lobos) and walk the top road back. I love Gardens so hanging out in any of Madeiras gardens are visits always enjoyed. Rabacal is also a favourite.

What do you think of the locals/people from Madeira?
I admire their love of life….their love of festas…the way they raise their children….their kindness and welcoming nature and work ethic,

Do you know an ‘off-the-beaten path’ place in Madeira? Tell us which one.
I like to wander the back roads of Funchal …walking up hill and down dale and finding hidden delights in the turn of an unexpected street. Walking in the mountains also brings delights and when lost these delights are more special.

We love souvenirs! Which one would you suggest us to buy in Madeira Island?
Oh dear I suppose I should buy Souvenirs.. I have brought Embroidery in the past and it gives me pleasure to use it. I have also brought videos and music from Madeira and books.

Any other thing(s) about Madeira that travelers should know?
I think Visitors should be aware that it is a dangerous occupation to visit Madeira. It very quickly becomes a drug you can not do without.
